Every coach has a short list of questions they have never quite had a straight answer to. Not the ones you can look up in two minutes. The ones where the honest answer starts with “it depends”, and nobody ever tells you what it depends on.
This is where we work through them. Each question gets a short, usable answer at the top, then the part that actually matters: what coaches who have spent a career on it say, in their own words, including the places they disagree with each other.
We are not handing you a session to copy. Copying is how you end up running somebody else’s training with your own players. The aim is to give you enough of the thinking to make the call yourself, on your pitch, with the group in front of you.
The answers draw on masterclasses recorded with international coaches, club coaches and specialists from across the game. Every claim is attributed to the coach who made it.
More questions and answers are added on an ongoing basis.
Technical
The skills every session touches, and the details that decide whether they hold up under pressure.
How do I coach a soft first touch in field hockey?
Why the receive falls apart before the ball arrives, and what to fix first.
How do I coach the hit so players get power without lifting or fouling?
Power comes from a repeatable swing, not from strength. Where lifting actually starts.
How do I teach the Indian dribble properly in field hockey?
Building it from the grip up, and why the left hand does most of the work.
Tactical
Reading the game before organising it. What the opposition is trying to do to you, and how to answer it.
How do I get my team building out from the back without turning it over?
The four triggers a press hunts for, and why the second pass is the real exit.
How do we beat a press in field hockey, especially off free hits and 16s?
Stop feeding the press what it wants. Telling a trap apart from a trigger.
What formation should I play in field hockey, and how do I pick the right system?
There is no best formation. Choosing the one your squad can actually sustain.
Mental
The part of coaching that decides whether the technical and tactical work ever shows up on a Saturday.
How do I build confidence in field hockey players that survives mistakes?
Anchoring belief to what a player controls, so one loose pass does not undo it.
How do I help a field hockey player let go of a mistake and reset?
A two-part reset a player can run on the pitch, and why it works.
How do I motivate field hockey players who have checked out?
Usually not laziness. What the environment has stopped giving them.
Physical
Preparing players for what a match actually asks of them, rather than for a fitness test.
How do I get field hockey players fit for the real demands of a game?
Short, repeated, high intensity efforts. Training the pattern, not the distance.
How do I build field hockey fitness without taking players off the ball?
Most of it can live inside stick and ball work. What has to sit outside.
What is the best field hockey warm-up to get game-ready and cut injuries?
Building it in stages, and priming the tissues that get injured most.
Have a question that is not here?
The list grows from what coaches actually ask. If something has been nagging at you all season, reply to any of our emails and tell us. The questions that keep coming back are the ones we answer next.
