Deflecting the ball into the circle only works when every role is agreed in advance, Cheesman argues. The player attacking the deflection must win their space earlier than they would for a normal pass, arriving in front of the defender just as the touch comes in. He shows set piece moves built on small movements away from a marker that are simple to set up and remarkably effective.
