David Harte about the Pygmalion effect & Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

Harte links the Pygmalion effect to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, arguing that the four outcomes Enrich describes map onto the climb from physiological needs to self-actualisation, and that a player needs the coach’s impulse to get there. He warns that a coach with a fixed picture of the player he wants can restrict anyone who does not fit, yet the player still has to bring humility, accept his limitations and decide what to do with praise and criticism. How the player responds to that input is what matters most. Watch the full session: The Pygmalion effect.
