Three stayed with him: the Seven Habits, which he still rereads; a book on high-stakes conversations that led to weekly sessions where Australian players paired up for difficult chats; and Change Your Questions, Change Your Life, on staying a learner rather than a judger when coaching asks you to judge constantly. Legacy, the story of the All Blacks, is the one book McLeod names. The Red Lions borrow its language, presenting each new player’s shirt through an older player and talking about leaving the shirt in a better place, an idea now marked by the World Cup star above the Belgian badge.
