PCA

Tanuscio was the assistant coach for the Irish women during the Nations Cup played in Spain. Ireland lost the final and promotion to the Pro League in the final vs home country Spain. But as always, from every tournament, from every game we learn our lessons. This time Tanuscio will talk about the PCA or penalty corner attack during this event. So bring your questions for when we are live and let’s make it an interactive session again.

Four questions come up repeatedly about the V-press, and Tanuscio answers each with footage: the high mid presses diagonally so vertical passes through the middle are denied; against two contact players the opposite side striker picks up the second one; the libero always takes the hotline; and against an overload he refuses to chase, sliding the back line across and leaving the farthest attacker free. The cut version of the V-press starts from the same shape, then the central striker cuts as the ball is played, with the help side squeezing across to shrink the space. The aim is to trap the carrier on the sideline in a 2v1. When the ball is on the right, the direct cut comes from the right striker instead, which stops the opposition switching the play. Behind the V-press sits a diamond of defenders, and the libero’s job never changes: cover the hotline. Tanuscio shows him cutting out ball after ball aimed through the central channel, each time sprinting back to retake his covering position. The speed of that recovery, back on the hotline the moment the ball is dealt with, is what he picks out in the footage. Protecting the centre comes first in the V-press, with every press arriving on a diagonal and pressure building from inside to outside. Tanuscio runs through the roles: the high mid must never be beaten vertically through the middle, the libero takes the hotline, the back three hold a diamond, and the help side tucks in when the ball is on the far wing, setting up a 3v1. Fitness decides how aggressively you can press. Tanuscio cites Argentina before Rio, where players covered 35 kilometres a day across sessions in the last stretch of preparation, because the coach wanted pressure on the ball and pressure again the moment it was lost. A team built for deeper defence and counter-attack needs a different engine, so the system has to match the players you have. How high should a diamond press sit: full, three-quarter or half pitch? Tanuscio argues there is no fixed answer. It depends on the defenders in front of you and the momentum of the game. Chasing a goal, you might press high for five minutes to force a turnover; protecting a lead late on, the opponent’s push often drags you deeper than you planned. At a long corner Tanuscio defends man to man inside the D, with the strikers and libero positioned to block balls played straight into the circle. If the ball goes back, the central striker presses; if it travels down the line, the nearest striker delays while a midfielder arrives to double team. The principle underneath it all is protecting the centre. Watch the full masterclass: Defensive System Variants & Pressing Strategies in Field Hockey.

Tanuscio matches his press to the opposition’s build-up. Against a back three he prefers the hook press with two high strikers, because it is easier to steer the central defender into playing through the middle, where the ball can be won. Against a back four he leans towards the diamond, with the side strikers tucked closer in, though he notes both systems can work either way. In the hook press two strikers play high and one sits lower, and the direction of pressure flips: from outside to inside, the reverse of the V-press. The side strikers cut the pass to the back, protect the middle on the first ball, then steer the second ball infield, where three or four defenders wait to win it. He points to India’s women as a team that runs it well. Watch the full masterclass: Defensive System Variants & Pressing Strategies in Field Hockey.
