Quick answer. Pick a test that matches what hockey actually is, which means repeated sprints with short recovery rather than a steady run to exhaustion. Then set two standards for your own squad, a desired one and a minimum, instead of importing a number from somewhere else. Retest, and judge the result against what you see on the pitch rather than against the score itself. On “what counts as a good score”, the honest answer from the coaches on this site is that there is no table to hand you. The numbers they quote are their own squads’ numbers, usually full-time internationals, and several of them say plainly that chasing the score is the mistake.

That is the short version. Here is how these coaches actually approach it.

Pick a test that matches the sport. Matthew Eyles has used most of them, and in Injury Reduction Training Methods he runs through the options: “I’ve used the yoyo test before, the yoyo intermittent recovery test. Back in the day when I first started out as a strength and conditioning coach, it was just a multistage fitness test, the continual twenty minute, 20 metre shuttle. Now what’s becoming very popular is the thirty fifteen… In Holland, what’s popular is the intermittent shuttle run test.” Phil Moreland made the same move and said why, in his pre-season masterclass: “we actually shifted away from the beep test because I don’t think the 20 metre shuttle test, this version of it, is very good for repeat sprint sports like hockey. And we actually moved to the thirty fifteen, which is a much better test.”

You do not need equipment to start. Eyles is blunt about it: “if you don’t have access to these things or you don’t understand them or you’re just doing things by yourself, stand on the corner of the field, tell your athletes to run around five times and time it or six times and time it, and then you’re going to get a bit of a measure.” Wouter Blondeel goes further in Mastering Physical KPIs and describes a whole battery that costs nothing: a standing broad jump or a triple hop on one leg for power, a pull-up or bench press test for upper body, a beep test for endurance, and a homemade repeated-sprint test where you ask for eight sprints with about twenty seconds of rest between each and simply watch whether the times hold up. His question is the useful part: “can he hold these eight sprints for a constant speed, yes or no?”

Two screens that take a minute each. Blondeel’s ankle check is a lunge with the heel down, pushing the knee forward: if the knee cannot travel past the toes, that ankle needs work before anything else does. His core check is a twenty second front plank, and he is watching for the pelvis dropping or a lot of shaking rather than for a time. Neither needs a stopwatch you do not already own.

What you are building is a profile, not a number. Blondeel again: “you have the speed, you have the endurance, you have the core stability stuff, you have a little bit of mobility, and you have some basic strength”. One score tells you almost nothing. Five cheap ones tell you where to spend the winter.

A good score is one you set for your own squad. This is the part that answers the question, and it is not the answer most coaches want. Moreland’s approach was to set “a desired standard and a minimum standard” and benchmark against those, with targets that were individualised and, in his words, “achievable for them, and they own those targets”. Nobody on this site publishes a table of what a club under-16 should hit on a Yo-Yo test, and the numbers the coaches do mention belong to specific squads: Olympic finalists, full-time internationals, particular seasons. Borrowing them is how you end up with a fifteen year old failing a standard that was never written for her.

Do not train to get better at tests. Moreland puts this as a rule: “we don’t train to get better at tests. It’s great that we use tests, and tests give us an understanding of where we might be and where we might need to go… If our training is appropriate, we will improve on the tests.” The moment the test becomes the target, the number stops measuring anything.

Because a good score is not the same as being fit on the pitch. Moreland describes a squad that was fixated on the beep test, and his own reaction: “I don’t really care about the beep test score. What I care more about is your ability to be able to express your fitness and your physicality on the pitch.” He is describing a real gap, not a hypothetical one: “the fitter girls were really fit on the tests, but they hadn’t yet been able to translate that into the performance environment.”

The signal that matters most does not come from a test at all. Glenn Turner gives the best answer to “how do I know” in Hockey Conditioning Made Simple, and it is free: “what people expect is you expect to see the player being sick over the fence or crawling and can’t move. But what I see as a coach is you didn’t make that extra step to make the chop on your forestick, or you meant to pass it to someone and you missed by a metre because you’re starting to fatigue.” Unfitness shows up as skill errors long before it shows up as exhaustion. Watch the last fifteen minutes of a game with that in mind and you have a test that costs nothing and measures the thing you actually care about.

The number can go the wrong way for the right reason. Turner’s own example is worth sitting with: “my best two examples are both my Olympic cycles. We trained too hard and too much because we became full time athletes. And during the course of the three months before the Olympics my beep test went down.” A falling score is not automatically a fitness problem. Sometimes it is a recovery problem wearing a fitness problem’s clothes.

Testing can cost you the players you are testing. Turner has watched it happen: “they’ll miss that training when they know there’s a test on, or they’ll miss that training when they know there’s more running.” His fix for a team that trains once a week is to take the score out of it entirely. “This week it’s a 3k run. I don’t care about your time. So this is really important. I need to see you do the run. I don’t care about your time.” Show them progression instead, even something as small as the same run at a heart rate five beats lower.

And some coaches would rather you did not test at all. Russell Coates is direct about it in Smart Pre-Season Planning: “I think it’s a bit of a shame to be doing endless shuttle runs, beep tests, yo-yo tests, anything you can think of… I feel like times have evolved and it’s time to bring conditioning onto the pitch instead of doing endless fitness drills.” Worth reading before you build a testing week, if only so you know what you are choosing.

If you want one thing measured properly, measure effort. Eyles’ session RPE is the cheapest monitoring tool there is: ask the player how hard that was out of ten, multiply by the minutes they trained, and you have a number. Eight out of ten across a hundred minutes gives 800. If one player is consistently reporting 1,300 for the same session as everyone else, that is worth a conversation, and you found it with a question rather than a GPS vest.

None of this gives you the table you wanted. What it gives you is a defensible way to build your own: choose a test that looks like hockey, set your squad’s own desired and minimum standards, retest, and check the number against what the players actually do in the last quarter. Watch the sessions in full, take what fits, and be suspicious of anyone who hands you a benchmark without telling you whose squad it came from.

Quick answer. There is no universal number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing about your squad. What these coaches do agree on is the shape of it. The floor is lower than most coaches think: once a week in the gym and once a week of real speed work will do a lot. The ceiling is set by recovery rather than enthusiasm. And the load that actually overcooks players is usually the load you cannot see, which is school, work, other sports and the other club they play for. Watch for skill errors and unexplained fatigue rather than waiting for somebody to be sick behind the goal.

That is the short version. Here is how the coaches on The Hockey Site work through it.

The floor is lower than you think. Matthew Eyles works with full-time internationals and still sets the bar somewhere a club coach can reach. In Injury Reduction Training Methods he describes his own programme as “one to three sessions a week, that’s a non-negotiable, at least once a week in the gym, even in tournament modes”, and then translates it down without any hand-wringing: “one to two times a week is great. If one time a week is all you got time for, great.” Speed gets the same treatment. “Speed once a week. Absolute non-negotiable.”

What a club week can actually look like. Mick Beunen runs the Belgian men’s programme, and when asked what a club should do with that he gives a straight answer in Physically game ready: cut the second hockey session, but keep “three sessions at least, and preferably four, to prepare your club game on the Sunday”. He also works in waves rather than a flat line, three weeks of gradual overload followed by one deload week, and he is candid that this is not what he sees elsewhere: it is “something that I don’t always see in international hockey or at club level, either”.

The load you cannot see is the one that hurts. This is the most useful idea on the page and it comes from Phil Moreland’s pre-season masterclass. Looking back at a squad with a serious injury record, his diagnosis was not the programme, it was the blind spot: “we didn’t understand the total load that the athlete was being exposed to. We didn’t know what was going on in Clubland. We didn’t know what was going on for some of our school age kids in their school environment. We haven’t taken into account that the school age athlete might be competing in two or three other sports. And they show up to your training session absolutely cooked, yet we continue to push.” He makes the same point about adults, having coached sides full of carpenters, builders and bricklayers, and asks how you account for the physicality of somebody’s job before you write their week.

So the fix starts with a conversation, not a plan. Moreland’s answer was to talk to the other coaches his players reported to, in both directions, so that nobody was writing a week in isolation. If your players belong to a school team and a club and a regional squad, you are one of four people loading them and the only one who can see your quarter of it.

Recovery is not a type of training. Eyles is firm about this and it changes how a week reads: “when I talk about recovery, I don’t talk about recovery training. It’s something that rubs me the wrong way a little bit. For me, you have recovery and you have training. And any training is something that you have to recover from.” Full rest days are scheduled deliberately, “because if you don’t, you’ll build up fatigue, and a build up of fatigue is going to increase that likelihood of injury”.

But do not deload to zero. The instinct when players look tired is to give them a week off, and Eyles thinks that is usually wrong: “deloading to a point of doing nothing is not always the best thing. A week off, especially a week off in season, you’ve got a bye round or something and you give the athletes a week off, it’s probably going to do more harm than good. Deloading your training a little bit, maybe having one or two sessions less depending on how much you train, that might help.”

The sessions you labelled easy are not easy. Glenn Turner describes exactly how a well-planned week quietly turns into an overload in Hockey Conditioning Made Simple: “they always get muddled between, oh, this one’s going to be easy because we’re doing this. But all of a sudden you’re running into deflect corners and you have a mini game at the end because you know as a player you want to play.” The intention was recovery. The session was not.

Training harder can make the numbers worse. Turner’s own example is worth sitting with, because it is not a cautionary tale about somebody else: “my best two examples are both my Olympic cycles. We trained too hard and too much because we became full time athletes. And during the course of the three months before the Olympics my beep test went down. And as an athlete about to go to the Olympics that’s not good physically, but it’s not good mentally either.”

How you spot it before it costs you a season. Eyles gives a practical list. Compare the last week’s load against the last month, and if the week is much heavier you may be overreaching. Then look for power dropping off, a sprint test coming back slower, and two things that sound too simple to matter: “are they getting sick? And what are their sleep patterns like? Because disrupted sleep, lacking in immune system are all signs of overtraining as well.” Turner’s version is the one you can use without any equipment at all. Unfitness and fatigue show up as skill errors first, a missed chop or a pass a metre off, long before anybody looks distressed.

The cheapest monitoring tool is a question. Eyles again: ask the player how hard the session was out of ten, multiply by the minutes they trained, and you have a number. Eight out of ten across a hundred minutes gives 800. If one player is reporting 1,300 for the same session the rest of the squad scored at 800, that is worth a conversation, and you found it without a GPS vest.

If you only see them twice a week. Turner’s prescription for that situation is deliberately undemanding, because the goal is that it actually happens: “This week it’s a 3k run. I don’t care about your time. So this is really important. I need to see you do the run. I don’t care about your time.” He also adds slow running as a recovery tool rather than a punishment: “everyone hates running slow but the benefits are huge and you recover better so you can train better the next day.”

And the sixteen year old playing for five teams. Turner has a script for that conversation, aimed at the player rather than the coach: “I can’t train on the field six days a week as a 16 year old. I could do a running session on Tuesday instead of going to hockey at all. I could do machine work in the gym on a Thursday with my body weight strength stuff and I’m going to be a better athlete for you.” Note who is doing the negotiating there. He wants the player able to make the case.

None of this adds up to a number of sessions. What it gives you is a way of reading your own week, so that when a player starts fading you can work out whether it was your programme, somebody else’s, or the fact that nobody has counted them together. Quick answer. Fit but slow to turn usually means they have never actually trained turning. Conditioning builds the engine, and changing direction is a separate skill with its own technique, most of which lives in the deceleration nobody coaches. Give it one deliberate slot a week, without stick and ball so there is nothing to hide behind, and progress it from planned to reactive so the player is reading rather than rehearsing. Then look at your pitch sizes, because a squad that only plays small-sided games never sprints and a squad that only plays big never has to stop.

That is the short version. Here is how these coaches take it apart.

Turning is not the running half of fitness. Wouter Blondeel separates the two cleanly in Mastering Physical KPIs: “high speed running is the running on a high intensity, mostly in a straight line. The explosive distance has to do with accelerations and decelerations. So more has to do with change of directions.” A player can be excellent at one and poor at the other, and a beep test will not tell you which.

Deceleration is a technique problem before it is a strength problem. Blondeel is explicit about the order: “for me, deceleration has all to do with, first of all, technical base. Second of all, of course, it has to do with posture, and posture has to do with stability.” Which means the first intervention is not the gym.

So film it, and coach it like a skill. His suggestion costs nothing and is the most practical thing on this page: “try to take some slow mo videos, try to work on the technique, try to see, okay, what is this guy doing if he’s going from his maximum speed to a slow speed? And how does he change direction? What is going on with his torso? What is going on with his knees?”

Give it a slot, and take the stick away. Matthew Eyles is the clearest voice on the dose, in Injury Reduction Training Methods: “once a week, what does that look like? Well, just a focused moment in training, whether it’s a warm up or whatever, where we’re really forcing the athletes to change direction hard. And this has to be done progressively, but giving them that moment without stick and ball, take that away, and allow them to really attack a change of direction, expose them to those sorts of forces over time will build up that robustness.”

Train the stop, not just the turn. Eyles thinks this is the commonly missed half, and he ties it to injuries as well as speed: “the deceleration component, I think that is something that we often overlook. If you look at injuries particularly around the knee, if you want to talk about quad injuries and things like that, a lot of them happen around that deceleration moment. So training that, having your athlete run to a point and stop dead, or stop dead on a command, even better, will help.”

Then make it reactive, because a match never tells you in advance. His progression is deliberately unglamorous: “progress it from maybe non-reactive. So, okay, athlete A, you’re going to run from this cone, stop, and when I say go again you’re going to shuffle here and accelerate out. To a bit more reactive where you’re going to run to this cone, and I’m going to tell you left or right, and then you’re going to go left or right and accelerate out. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Keep it simple, but just think about it and progress it.” And it should cover every direction a game asks for: “forwards, backwards, sideways shuffling, sideways running and looking over your shoulder, running backwards to turning and accelerating out.”

Reason one your fit players are slow: they never actually sprint. Blondeel names this directly and it is uncomfortable: “most of all, I’m trying to focus the guys towards 100% sprinting. And that’s something they don’t tend to do often. In clubs, they don’t tend to do it often.” Eyles says the same thing from the other side: “fast running is not sprinting. There has to be intent there. So seeing someone run across the field at 80% is probably not enough.”

Reason two: your pitch sizes never change. This is the structural one, and it is free to fix. Eyles: “we don’t see enough variation in the sizes of the fields for your small sided games. If for whatever tactical reason you do need to only play on small fields, well, then make sure you’re getting your sprinting in somewhere else. If you’re only playing on big fields, make sure you’re getting your change of direction, your agility exposure in somewhere else as well.” Xavi Haro makes the same point as a design lever rather than a warning: “when the pitch is smaller, the amount of accelerations or decelerations will be higher. And when the pitch is longer, the amount of accelerations and decelerations will be lower. But in the amount of sprints, when the pitch is big, we will have a lot of sprints.” Your pitch dimensions are a dial. Most coaches leave it in one position all season.

Attach the turn to a decision. Mick Beunen refuses to run agility as a separate block in Physically game ready: “we mostly integrate our physical skills in the hockey, whether it’s aerobic side and anaerobic side and agility part. It’s all integrated in the hockey session.” The mechanism is simple enough to steal tomorrow: “you do agility work, you call out a number and that number makes that he has to choose one side or another. The same you can do with showing them with your fingers or with your colour.” A turn the player chose is a different skill from a turn they rehearsed.

Make it a theme for the week, not a drill. Andreu Enrich puts it best, in a masterclass on training design: “one day is focused on change of direction. So the coach says, okay, on the first training day of the week, changes of direction is the thing that we want to promote in your hockey drills, in your hockey small sided games, in everything you do. So the coaches can design tasks where there’s a high density of players in a small pitch so there’s a lot of acceleration, deceleration and change of direction.” That reframes the whole problem. You are not adding a ladder to the warm-up, you are choosing what the session is about.

The strength underneath it. Blondeel ties the two ends together: “from the strength point is the deceleration, eccentric. So it means that if a guy doesn’t have good eccentric strength, it will have disadvantages towards injuries, but also towards his change of direction.” He starts at the ankles, on the grounds that “there it starts, you have contact with the ground”. Eyles describes what the cut actually asks for: “when you plant your foot to cut and change direction, there’s a big eccentric and isometric moment there.”

The dose, in one line. Eyles: “one time a week sprinting, one time a week agility. Just make sure you’re nice and warm.”

None of this needs equipment you do not have. What these coaches give you is a way of seeing the turn, so you can tell whether your player is slow because of the engine, the technique, the strength, or because nothing in your week has ever asked them to stop hard and go the other way. Quick answer. Yes, you can build most of your field hockey fitness inside stick and ball work. Design games and drills so the running is high enough to matter, keep the ball involved for as much of the session as you can, and only step outside for the foundation strength and prep work that ball drills cannot cover.

That surface answer is comfortable, but the coaches on The Hockey Site would not want you to stop there. Conditioning inside drills only works if you actually control the intensity, monitor what a session is costing your players, and keep a small amount of off-ball foundation work in the plan. Here is how a few of them think about it.

Start by keeping it simpler than you think. In Hockey Conditioning Made Simple, Glenn Turner makes the case that hockey is first and foremost an aerobic game, so the ability to keep running matters more than a big number on a squat or bench. He warns that overcomplicated gym programmes and heavy lifting have ended careers rather than built them, and argues coaches should back themselves to use simple bodyweight movements, squats, lunges, push-ups and pull-ups, that can be done on any field. That is good news for anyone worried about time on the ball, because it frees you to put the running load where the ball already is.

Make small-sided games your main engine. The Small Sided Games masterclass with Andreu Enrich is built on the idea that reducing numbers and space forces more touches, more decisions and more repeated efforts per player. The same tool that teaches basic skills and off-ball principles is also a conditioning tool, because you can dial the physical demand up or down through pitch size, player numbers, rest between rounds and the rules you impose. A tight four-versus-four with short recoveries asks a very different physical question than a spread-out seven-versus-seven, and both keep sticks and a ball in every player’s hands.

Integrate the physical work rather than bolting it on. In Physically game ready, Mick Beunen, physical performance coach for the Belgian men, describes running small-sided games above 85 percent of maximum heart rate with limited rest to reproduce match intensity. His principle is that strength is the foundation but is never trained in isolation, it is always combined with speed, movement and game context. He also leans on dual tasks, pairing agility and running with decisions under pressure, so the movement is stored alongside the hockey rather than separate from it. For club teams with only two sessions a week, his advice is blunt, integrate physical skills into the hockey session and keep short strength routines on the side.

Condition through game scenarios, not just fitness tests. That thinking runs through Smart Pre-Season Planning with Russell Coates, who encourages coaches to reach match fitness through targeted hockey activities and game scenarios rather than isolated running drills. When the conditioning stimulus is wrapped inside a pressing game or a transition drill, players get fit while rehearsing the exact actions they need on a Saturday, which is a far better return on limited pitch time than laps of the field.

Sequence the week so the load lands where you want it. Conditioning inside drills can quietly overcook a squad if you do not plan the rhythm. In Practice Session Design, Fede Tanuscio treats session and week design as a deliberate act, deciding which sessions carry the highest physical demand and which pull back. If your Tuesday is a high-intensity small-sided block, your plan needs to know that, so the harder ball-based conditioning arrives on the right day and eases off before a match.

Measure it so it is not guesswork. Mastering Physical KPIs in Field Hockey with Wouter Blondeel is a useful companion here, because conditioning through drills only stays safe when you know what each drill actually costs. Whether that is sprint counts, explosive metres or simply honest intensity cues you can read off the group, having a KPI in mind turns a fun game into a controlled training load. Beunen makes a similar point about monitoring roles differently, midfielders on combined sprint and explosive distance, attackers on explosive metres.

Keep a little off-ball foundation in the mix. Not everything can live inside a stick and ball drill, and Injury Reduction Training Methods with Matthew Eyles is the reason why. Robustness, tissue tolerance and the prehab work that keeps players available are best handled with dedicated foundation strength, much of which Turner shows can be simple bodyweight work. That is the honest limit of conditioning inside drills, it can carry your aerobic base and your repeated-sprint quality, but it works best sitting on top of a small, non-negotiable block of foundation work.

Put together, the message from these coaches is reassuring, you rarely need to choose between fitness and the ball. Build small-sided games that run hard, integrate the physical demand into game scenarios, plan the week so the load lands well, keep an eye on what each session costs, and protect a little foundation work on the side. The masterclasses below go far deeper than any single session plan, and they are worth an evening if you want to design this properly.
